Ingredients:

  • 1 package (16 ounces) of thawed phyllo dough
  • 1 ½ cups of melted unsalted butter
  • 3 cups of chopped nuts (such as walnuts, pistachios, or almonds)
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Nut Filling:
    • In a bowl, mix together the chopped nuts and ground cinnamon. Set aside.
  2. Assemble the Baklava:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Brush a baking dish (about 9×13 inches) with melted butter.
    • Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush it with melted butter. Repeat with several more sheets, brushing each with butter, until you have about 8-10 sheets layered.
  3. Add the Nut Mixture:
    • Sprinkle a layer of the nut mixture evenly over the phyllo dough.
  4. Continue Layering:
    • Add another layer of phyllo dough on top of the nuts, brushing with butter between each layer. Repeat until all the phyllo dough is used, brushing the top layer generously with butter.
  5. Cut into Portions:
    • Use a sharp knife to cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Be careful not to press down too hard on the layers.
  6. Bake:
    • Place the baklava in the preheated oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.
  7. Make the Syrup:
    • While the baklava is baking, combine the sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  8. Pour Syrup Over Baklava:
    • Once the baklava is done baking and still hot, immediately pour the warm syrup over the top, making sure to cover all the pieces.
  9. Let it Cool:
    • Allow the baklava to cool completely in the pan before serving. This allows the syrup to soak into the layers.
  10. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Serve the baklava at room temperature. It’s delicious on its own or with a scoop of ice cream on the side.

Enjoy your homemade baklava! It’s a labor of love but worth the effort for this classic sweet treat.
