Patty melts with secret sauce are a delicious and classic dish that combines elements of a burger with the comforting flavors of grilled cheese. Here’s a simple recipe to make them:

Ingredients:

For the Patties:

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

For the Secret Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon pickle relish
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Additional Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of rye bread
  • 8 slices of Swiss cheese
  • Butter for grilling

Instructions:

1. Make the Secret Sauce:

  • In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, chopped onion, pickle relish, salt, and pepper. Adjust the seasoning according to your taste. Set aside.

2. Prepare the Patties:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well, but avoid overworking the meat.
  • Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties, slightly larger than the size of your bread slices.

3. Cook the Patties:

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Once the oil is hot, add the patties to the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.

4. Assemble the Patty Melts:

  • Wipe out the skillet and return it to medium heat.
  • Butter one side of each slice of rye bread.
  • Place a slice of bread, butter side down, onto the skillet. Top it with a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked patty, a dollop of secret sauce, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Finally, place another slice of bread on top, butter side facing up.
  • Cook the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

5. Serve:

  • Once the patty melts are cooked, remove them from the skillet and let them cool for a minute or two.
  • Slice each sandwich diagonally and serve hot with extra secret sauce on the side for dipping.
