Amish Baked Custard is a classic dessert that’s simple to make yet incredibly delicious. It features a creamy and velvety custard baked to perfection, often flavored with vanilla and topped with a sprinkle of nutmeg. Here’s a traditional recipe to try:

Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups milk (whole milk works best for richness)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ground nutmeg, for garnish

Instructions:

1. Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a baking dish or individual ramekins by greasing them lightly with butter or cooking spray.

2. Beat the Eggs and Sugar:

  • In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs and granulated sugar together until well combined and slightly frothy.

3. Heat the Milk:

  • In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it’s warm but not boiling. Remove it from the heat.

4. Temper the Eggs:

  • Slowly pour a small amount of the warm milk into the beaten eggs and sugar mixture, whisking constantly. This step helps to temper the eggs and prevent them from curdling when mixed with the hot milk.

5. Combine the Ingredients:

  • Gradually add the remaining warm milk to the egg mixture, whisking continuously until smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract.

6. Pour into Baking Dish(es):

  • Pour the custard mixture into the prepared baking dish or individual ramekins.

7. Bake:

  • Place the baking dish(es) in a larger baking pan or roasting pan. Carefully pour hot water into the larger pan to create a water bath around the custard dishes. The water should come about halfway up the sides of the dishes.
  • Sprinkle ground nutmeg lightly over the top of each custard.

8. Bake:

  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes for individual ramekins or 50-60 minutes for a larger baking dish, or until the custard is set around the edges but still slightly wobbly in the center.

9. Cool and Serve:

  • Remove the baked custard from the oven and let it cool to room temperature.
  • Once cooled, you can serve the custard warm or chilled, depending on your preference. It can be enjoyed as is or with a dollop of whipped cream or a sprinkle of cinnamon on top.

Enjoy the comforting and nostalgic flavors of homemade Amish Baked Custard as a delightful dessert any time of year!
